Let's assume you are at a dinner event, a reunion, an industry or trade group meeting, or anything similar. One of the things you will invariably see are two things:

People passing out business cards

People who are looking for a job giving out something

When you come back from that event, you have a stack of similar looking business cards. What do they tell you? Company Name, Address, perhaps a mission statement, perhaps the products/services they sell. Usually rectangle and 2" x 3" or so. White with some color.

Take a look at this presentation then ask yourself, what could you do differently. At the end of the event you want to give them something that begs them to want to see more —

If anyone knows me well, they know that one of my true business hero's is Bob Parsons, CEO and Founder of GoDaddy.Com. He's outlandish, loud, in-your-face and has his own formula for success which has proven to be sucessful over and over.

To me these are all valid reasons to listen to him and though you may not want to copy his brand(or you may), it's important to have basic rules to follow and develop your brand.

Building his current business, GoDaddy, to be the #1 Reseller of domain registrations and his many other hosted business solutions has forced him to hire and interview thousands of people over the years. With the same flambouyance he uses to build his GoDaddy business, below he points out 9 Interview Rules you need to do to land the job you want.

Here is a summary of his 9 rules with some of my own tips. This is great stuff so I hope you watch the video and enjoy the content.

Rule #1: Understand the Purpose of the Interview - You're there for them, not you. Make sure you know how you match up to the job and talk about that. Go to an earlier article of mine How to Answer the First Question in An Interview http://www.thejobswami.com/2009/08/24/the-first-interview-question-how-to-guide-the-interview/

Rule #2: Stand Out In the Interview – A key part of the interview is preparation. Bob talks about making sure you go to the company website and study. I'll take it a step further and go to the competitors website and learn the industry. Visit the company in advance and learn what makes it tick. Be a Problem Solver.

Rule #3: Be Energetic in the Interview: A few tips on how to do this. 1) Talk rapidly and change your speech patterns 2) Sit on the edge of the seat 3) Smile and laugh and make them laught. The key is to show you have a personality and you can get excited.

Rule #4: Be Excited About the Job: Not to give away #5, but ask lots of questions. Show how you really are excited about what they do. Ask about the industry and the potential. Before leaving, make sure you tell them you are excited and want to work with them.

Rule #5: Be Inquisitive: Having done your homework, have lots of questions prepared about the job, the company the people you'll work with, the customers. This will show #4, how you are really excited about the job.

Rule#6: Think like one of the team: Don't go in like a candidate. Go in like you know what they need, what needs to be done and by asking lots of questions come up with some conclusions which you can ask them about during the interview. Come up with ideas with them (but don't tell them as you're still learning). This is how you learn to do consultative selling. Ask lots of questions, pose them with the different problems and they'll give you the answers you can then feed back to them in summary form. They'll be impressed how well you listen and how much you want to solve issues.

Rule #7: Do Not Spend Time Talking about What You Want: Don't talk about pay, vacation, benefits, what gift you'll get at christmas or anything similar. Focus on them, not you for the first interview. CRITICAL.

Rule #8: Use Sales Techniques - I say this all the time and Bob Parsons confirms it here. You are in sales during this process. Use techniques sales people would, such as; 1)Tell them you want the order(the Job), 2) Try to put a timeframe to it as you are speaking with other people, 3)Make them feel they are the most important to you, 4)Get them visualizing with you what it would be like when you are there See my earlier article on Visualization at: http://www.thejobswami.com/2009/09/19/visualization-to-succeed-the-way-you-planned/

Rule #9: Follow up properly and Quickly Don't leave the interview without picking up the business cards and if you forget, get them from the fron t desk receptionist. If you can, email from the road quickly then follow up with a nice letter typed and mailed. This shows them you can respond quickly, you have current technology and you still have formal etiquette with courtesy. A great combination.

While you're at the GoDaddy site, consider getting your're own domain name. Below I printed a link for you to get 10% off immediately. It's cheap, easy and the start of your personal brand. You can get a .com but if you noticed, Bob used .me. Alternatives are .net, .info, .biz and many others. Setting up a personal site can be very easily done and GoDaddy also has free templates. See the link below as well and under the picture above.

Have fun with this and follow these 9 steps.
