Daily Career Tip #41: Moving Expenses

It's been common practice lately for companies only hiring 'local' employees or if hiring from out side the area to pay NO moving expenses at all.   For a family moving from a house that cost could be $60,000 or more and for renters $15,000 or more.

In Salary Negotiations take into account moving expenses and ask them if they pay for it.  If you know up front NO, discuss signon bonuses, or factor in an amortized schedule to recoup that cost.  Perhaps a trade-off like education expenses can be done if for instance that is an expense you have perhaps the company can pick it up.

Overall, consider the overall cost of the move and figure out how you can get it paid for, even if it's not a direct payout for that.
