Business people love solutions to problems.  They love people that can provide solutions, particularly when unsolicited.

It doesn't matter if you are employed or not, if you are looking for a new opportunity examine an area of a company or industry that has a problem.  Meet with people that are in that industry or company.  Uncover the root of the problem and the various symptoms that problem causes.  Once you discover the root cause of the problem, you then start to come up with options to fix that problem.  Once you filter out the very best, make a proposal and and make and appointment with a Key Decision Maker (not a middle-manager who will steal the idea) in a position of power and offer the solution with the caveat you are the one to implement it.

As a 'consultant', you will get noticed and this may provide an opportunity for a new career.
